Private tuition banned
ITANAGAR, Jan 31: The Department of Education has banned practice of private tuitions by government teachers. A departmental release said that action will be initiated against teachers found indulging in private tuitions. A govt teacher is under an obligation to devote energies whole heartedly in teaching and not divert their attention and effort in search of private tuition.
Reh greetings
ITANAGAR, Jan 31: The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh Lt. Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma has extended greetings to the people of the State on the auspicious occasion of Reh and expressed hope that the festival will evoke the blessing of Almighty and spreads the message of love, peace and communal harmony.
In his festival message, the Governor said that Reh, one of the most important festivals of the Idu Mishmi community reflects the vibrant and diverse cultural heritages of our State. He urged upon every member of the community and members of other tribes to actively participate and display the cohesive bonding.
Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has also extended warm greetings to the people of the state on the auspicious occasion of Reh festival.
In his festival message, the CM hoped that Reh would bring with it peace, prosperity, happiness and communal harmony in the society.
Workshop on Human Rights
Likabali, Jan 31: Volunteer’s Rural Development Society (VRDS) in association with Centre for Social Development, Manipur organized a day long workshop on “International Humanitarian Laws and Human Rights at Tourist Lodge at Likabali on Jan 31. The main objective of the workshop was to make people familiar and aware on human rights and how they are related to one’s life. Speaking on the occasion, Kombi Tao, teacher from Govt HS School, Likabali spoke about violation of the human rights in the society and its prevalence in the community and the region. Her focus was on human rights violation against women and domestic violence.
Ranjan K Baruah from North East Youth Foundation spoke about the International Humanitarian Laws and how they are related in conflict areas. He has also spoke about Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act and how it is prevalent in the north eastern region. Rickar Taipodia, Secretary of VRDS has also shared his experience and said how human rights are important for every individual.
SP rubbishes allegation, blames water shortage
PASIGHAT, Jan 31: East Siang SP Devendar Arya has dismissed allegation of delayed response to the Gandhi School fire accident on Jan 29 by fire tenders. He said that fire tenders reached the area with filled tanks as soon the Fire station was informed about the incident.
Fire fighters rushed with two full loaded fire tenders and started to extinguish the fire, which had already set the place ablaze.
Since the water was not available in the nearest refilling point and therefore both
the fire tenders had to go to Pasighat market water refilling point four times each

NSS Camp
AALO, Jan 31: National Service Scheme (N.S.S.) volunteers of S.F.S. College, Aalo led by programme officer Reyom Ete conducted a special winter camp at Pakam village on 29th Jan last. During the camp, the volunteers extensively participated in the repairing and renovation of a house in Pakam village. An interaction programme was also organized wherein the significance of organizing the N.S.S camp was explained. The services rendered by N.S.S. team were appreciated by the villagers who requested the SFS College to organize such camps in near future.
Allegation refuted
ITANAGAR, Jan31: Contradicting the statement given by the villagers of Leoporiang and Pape Sango village, wherein it claimed that ongoing c/o road construction of Leporiang to Sango is destructing flora and fauna, few members of Panchayati Raj of the area today claimed the statements as baseless. In a letter address to the Chief Secretary, it condemned the people who are seeking compensation claiming that they are the real land affected people. The PR leader further made it clear that they never claimed for compensation rather resolved not to seek compensation from the project.

SMILE conducts public awareness programme
ITANAGAR, Jan 31: Indo Global Social Service Society (SMILE) conducted a programme to sensitize and create awareness among public on various social issues, their rights and entitlements and government schemes at Nyorch, Naharlagun yesterday.
The program aimed to create awareness and curiosity among the younger generation about social issues, rights and entitlements.
Resource person of the programme Patey Tayum, Chairman of Arunachal Civil Society, highlighted the roles of NGOs in driving the society in right path. He urged the youth groups, village welfare committees, individuals to come forward and play active role in the development of society with the help of NGOs.
He also highlighted on various rights and entitlements, most importantly of RTI, its functioning and how an individual can use RTI for the betterment of society. He also briefed about RTE Act and its usefulness.
One of the team members of ACS Bengia Seema had a brief introduction of ILP and its importance in state like Arunachal Pradesh.

Foundation day
ITANAGAR, Jan 31: All Sagalee Students’ Union (ASSU) celebrated its XXVI foundation day at Parang yesterday.
On the occasion, the members organised a social service and also constructed a house to be used as girls’ hostel kitchen of government secondary school Parang.
Later, the team visited primary health centre, Parang and informed that there were no doctor in the PHC during their visit.
Meanwhile, the union appealed to the medical staff of Parang PHC to stay at Parang and also appealed the concerned department to provide adequate medicine and other necessary medical equipment at Parang PHC before the advent of rainy season.
Doimukh College NSS unit conducts special camp
ITANAGAR, Jan 31: NSS unit of Government College Doimukh conducted two days special camp on January 30 and 31 in Lekhi village under Rose Panchayat, around 15 kilometers from Doimukh.
On the first day of the programme the NSS volunteers along with the Panchayat members, Gam Buras, school teachers and general people of the village under the supervision of NSS Programme Officer Dr. Jommi Loyi constructed an approach road for the Government Primary School and cleaned the surrounding of the school campus.
Awareness programme on HIV/AIDS, role and importance of Panchayat Raj, health and hygiene, and community service was conducted on the second day of the camp which was attended among others by Principal Dr. N T Rikam.
The resource persons Dr. Toko Yazir interacted with the people on the essence of personal, family and village hygiene, while Dr Toko Aku shared ideas on what physiotherapy is all about. David Gao, Asst. Prof from Rajiv Gandhi University, Department of Political Science communed with the villagers on the role and importance of Panchayat Raj. Police thwarts attempt to abduct PSU GM, NDFB(S) militants held
Lohit, Dibang Valley, Lower Dibang Valley and Longding leads drug peddling cases
Itanagar, Jan 31: Arunachal Police have foiled an attempt to abduct the General Manager of a PSU here by arresting two NDFB(S) militants and three of the outfit's linkmen.
"On specific intelligence inputs about their plan to kidnap the official, a police team kept track of their movement for the past couple of days and arrested three local linkmen from Ganga Market here early this week," IGP (Law and Order) I D Shukla told reporters here today.
On interrogation, the arrested linkmen spilled the beans which led to the arrest of the NDFB (S) militants from Chaoldhowa in Assam's Lakhimpur district on Thursday last, he said.
"The arrested rebels, wanted in several extortion cases in the state and neighbouring Assam, were planning to abduct a general manager of a public sector undertaking (PSU)," he said.
Three pistols and live ammunitions were recovered from them.
He said after the massacre of Adivasis by NDFB(S) militants on December 23 last, the state police in close coordination with Army and Assam police was on strict vigil to thwart any attempt of rebels trying to sneak into the state's territory. Shukla further said that around 167 cases of drug peddling were registered from Lohit, Dibang Valley, Lower Dibang Valley and Longding districts last year.
Reports of involvement of NSCN(K) in drug peddling at Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts were also available with the police, he said.
Meanwhile, an alleged drug peddler was arrested with 50 gram of brown sugar from Namsai in Lohit district, police said today. The man has been identified as Mohd Serbeque Ahmed of Dibrugarh in Assam. He was caught by a woman who visited her house at Namsai on January 28 last. In his absence, the woman searched his bag and found the contraband and informed the police leading to his arrest yesterday, IGP (Law and Order) I D Shukla told reporters here. "The contraband was brought from Dimapur," he said. PTI
Centre urged for early approval of airport project
ITANAGAR, Jan 31: Civil Aviation Minister Thangwang Wangham yesterday urged the Central Govt to accord approval in principle for early construction of green field airport project at Hollongi site.
While briefing details on the civil aviation activities in Arunachal Pradesh at the meeting of civil aviation ministers of north eastern states with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju at Guwahati, Wangham pleaded to the Centre for according “in principle approval” to the project at Hollongi site at the earliest so that Airport Authority of India (AAI) may process the DPR for Public Investment Board clearance and the fund be released in this current financial year.

ITANAGAR, Jan 31: The Arunachal Pradesh State Social Welfare Board celebrated the
National Girl Child Week from Jan 24-
The week long celebrations culminated today with its main event at a hotel in Naharlagun. The topic of this main event was “Education to every girl child and awareness against female foeticide” which is a nationwide campaign.
The event saw a painting competition among children, mainly girl child beneficiaries of Rajiv Gandhi National Creche Scheme which is implemented by various NGOs in the State, followed by a dance competition.
Simultaneously, a workshop was also organized in which the functionaries from various aided NGOs under the Board participated. The main focus of the workshop was to evolve a strategy within the ambit of the existing schemes of the Board to disseminate awareness in the society for ensuring education to every girl child and eradicate female foeticide.
Marina Nido, Chairperson, APSSWB in her message stressed upon the need for a holistic approach to attain the objective of education for every girl child and eradication of female foeticide. She called upon all the aided NGOs to work with more conviction & sincerity and in tandem with the government in order to ascertain gender equality in our society.
Longding District Bandh call passes off peacefully
ITANAGAR, Jan 31: The 24hrs Longding District Bandh called by Longding District Students’ Union (LDSU) and Wancho Students’ Union (WSU) went off peacefully on Friday. The bandh was called to demand for posting of a new DC belonging to IAS cadre. The Unions alleged that they have no faith in the present DC Tope Bam, accusing him of inefficiency. They further stated that the students have been pursuing the state govt to fulfil their demands with many representations. The state govt has to immediately take steps to mitigate the demands, said a release.

Implementation of CSS reviewed
ITANAGAR, Jan 31: The Director of Rural Development (RD) Tarin Dakpe reviewed the implementation and performance of all the centrally sponsored schemes and programmes implemented by the Rural Development Department in a meeting held here yesterday.
The Director reviewed the implementation of IWMP, IAY, Aam Adami Bima Yojana, Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jandhan Yojana and requested the Project Directors to make all out efforts for successful and effective implementation of all these programmes. He advised the Project Directors to strictly monitor all the projects implemented at grassroots level and maintain the transparency for effective implementation of all the CSS programmes.

Women’s org boycott central Reh in protest against selling of alcohol

central Reh celebration of this year after the Central Reh Celebration Committee

Reportedly, when talks with the committee seemed futile, some of the women members of the CRCC who are also members of the EMWEF walked out of the CRCC.
"We had never asked the CRCC for an altogether complete ban on alcohol during the festivals, as it is being projected by them. In fact, we had even requested the CRCC to purchase alcohol from the SHGs to distribute amongst guests through the committee, as the main idea is to discourage its selling in stalls, because 'Yu' (local alcohol) is a part of our tradition but selling Yu is not", said the representative of EMWEF.
Last year, the EMWEF was a part of the CRCC and had put a ban on selling of alcohol in stalls during the festival. 15 stalls were given out to SHGs to sell their handicrafts, handlooms and other products including eating items. This year, out of the 18 stalls in the festival campus, 14 are reported to be for selling alcohol. With no hopes of cooperation from the CRCC, the EMWEF started approaching the SHGs in order to discourage them from selling alcohol at the festival. They encouraged the SHGs to sell food items and handicrafts at the stalls. "Since the SHGs did not comply with our request, giving reasons of them already investing money in alcohol and going in loss, we decided to do something about it wherein they would not have to bear any losses but at the same time they wouldn't sell alcohol", informed the EMWEF representative.
Reportedly, the members of the EMWEF raised a fund through donation amongst themselves and a few willing senior ladies of the society, in order to procure alcohol from the SHGs in exchange of money. This procured alcohol was later disposed off by the EMWEF. Items for candle making as well as training was provided by the forum. "The main idea was to stop women from selling alcohol for making a living, but to think out of the box and bring out their creativity into making better products for a better source of income, and contribute towards the development and betterment of the society as a whole", said GS EMWEF Rakhi Linggi. One of the SHGs informed that the CRCC has been pursuing them and other SHGs, adamantly asking them to sell alcohol in their stalls during the festival. VC EMWEF Jyoti Linggi said that the saddest part of this fight for a cause for the betterment of the society is that they are fighting against an educated lot.
"We are an NGO working for the society, taking steps one at a time. We understand that fighting for a cause is never easy and we will have to face a lot of hardships, but we also believe that eventually, success will follow. Negative feedback will always be there but the truth that there are positive supporters can also not be denied. The EMWEF has only a handful of active members today but we believe we will be joined by more women willing to fight for a common cause for a better society", added Linggi. Meanwhile, the selling of alcohol in the stalls has been confirmed.

‘True change comes about when the will for it comes from within us.’ ‘Change starts from the home’... surf the net seeking for quotes on change and thousands pop up. You start reading each one minutely and start thinking, this is good...oh this makes more sense...wow this is perfect for the situation and so on. Then you start to remember and analyze all the small instances that pop into your mind of all the real changes you have noticed and the realization comes that change occurs bit by bit and the most important and difficult change is a change in the mindset of the people.
This slow and steady change in the mindset is manifesting itself in the initiatives that the people are taking up in working towards bringing about a change by themselves instead of waiting for the others or the government to do it. Where once people waited for the authorities to take action while justifying their attitude by saying ‘it is not our job’, now the people have stopped waiting and have started taking action themselves. This becomes apparent when comparisons are made between what was and what is.
As a child staying in a boarding school in the midst of the jungle, far away from home and missing my parents in the early hours of the morning, the bark of a deer and chirping of birds intensified my loneliness. Fast forwards twenty five years, in a different parts of the state with a different jungle nearby, lying awake early in the morning and what do I hear, nothing, no chirping of birds as expected, but silence. This silence is what we will be hearing in our jungles if we continue to go for ‘shikar’ (hunting) to pass our time. Although we realise the importance of wildlife in our jungles and know that the Wildlife Protection Act has been in force for years and prohibitory orders and notices are brought out from time to time, the will to follow it was negligible. But now the public of Upper Subansiri has decided to work for a change. The organizations like the Sippi Sinyik Sangam Welfare Society of Sippi have put a ban on wildlife hunting and illegal methods of fishing and even lodging a complaint against one of their own for violating the ban, the villages of Daporijo Township Area Welfare Association (VDTAWA) and the people of Dulom and Nima villages have banned wildlife hunting for a period of five years. We even have the Tagin Cultural Society putting a ban on the serving of wild meat in all official functions, which is a step in the right direction.
On my first coming to Daporijo in Upper Subansiri, during a discussion on exorbitant price of wild meat and the need to curb the vendors from quoting their own prices, a person said that there was no option but to buy at the price quoted as demand was high. Now we have to remember that we were talking about a commodity which we could easily live without. 5 years later and gradually the mindset of people is changing. Just recently, interacting with another person I came to know that prominent members of the society here had stopped consuming wild meat setting an example to follow by the society people and stop the practice of hunting, selling and buying wild animals. This small step on their part has made a dent, albeit a small one, into the demand and supply chain and is a small step towards the right direction.
Other spheres where the winds of change have blown are in the attitude that people have towards cleanliness of their surroundings and respect and consideration shown towards care and maintenance of public property. We tend to show proper care and concern towards keeping our immediate surrounding clean but anything beyond is not our concern but of the authorities.
Earlier any call for social service had very less impact but now people have come forward to keep their markets and colonies clean. Gandhi Market and Pakam Colony in Daporijo stand as examples where the will of the people has made the place cleaner and more presentable. The night time streets in some colonies of Daporijo are brighter too because the people have dipped into their own pockets to install street lights instead of waiting for the authorities to do so. This extension of the care given for private property to public property is a heartening change that can be seen slowly spreading from one person to another and one area to another.
Change, even if gradual, is noticeable and appreciated if it is a positive one. Let’s hope that this change continues and the efforts to save the wildlife and to keep the surroundings clean bear fruit and the place transforms into a clean, green and beautiful one.
Awareness prog on women empowerment, alcohol and drug menace

Defending champion Telam Cricket Team from Assam won the opening match defeating host Oyan. Oyan set a modest target of 86 runs to win before Telam Cricket Team (Assam). The team from Telam easily reached the target in the 10th over and won the match.
The opening ceremony was attended by retired IAF officer (Fighter Pilot) Mohonta Pangging who suggested the budding players to practice hard and maintain strict discipline to become a good player. Pangging, who served in the rank of 'Group Captain' also encouraged them to play with true sportsman spirit to achieve success in the field of sports in the future.
The trophy for this edition has been donated by Ponil Bori of Oyan village, who is currently serving as Block Development Officer at Nari (East Siang) in memory of his late parents Lomeswar Bori and Topi Bori.
During a briefing, Bori recalled the contributions of late Kolyan Pait and late Sanjeeb Bori for development of games and sports in the area.
